Summary |
Telephone directory that includes the telephone numbers of residents, local businesses, advertisements and instructions on how to use the telephone. In August 1927, 95 years ago, Illinois Bell Telephone Company issued a new directory for Bartlett and Roselle which consisted of six pages of subscriber's names and exchange numbers for these two villages. It also included Elgin subscribers whose pages numbered 54. Note the simplicity of the exchange number. Bartlett Village Hall was 67. Dial service did not exist yet, just pick up the phone and tell the operator what exchange you wanted. Image 1- The cover included advertisements. Check out the financial standings of the Bartlett State Bank whose exchange was 2. Image 2- One of the pages included information about service in general. Notice Bartlett subscribers had a toll rate to call Elgin. Directions were also given in regards to making a long-distance call. Image 3- Names and exchanges- At this time Bartlett School was located at North and Hickory Avenues. The school's exchange was 61-J. For rural residents, township locations were listed. Image 4- The back cover included advertisements. Additional ads could also be found on inside pages. Thurnau & Krumfuss, once located on Main Street, was the first Bartlett business to sell automobiles. |
