Program, 8 1/2" w x 11" l, paper, white with black typed writing, folded in fours, program for ceremony awarding John Hilliard with Boy Scouts of America's Eagle Award. Front: Troop 23, Post 2, 1st Eagle Award Ceremony June 14, 1959, Bartlett Firehouse, 8 p.m. On June 14, 1959, the Eagle Scout award ceremony for Bartlett's John Hillard Jr. was held. His achievement, earning the highest rank in the Boy Scouts of America, was celebrated by the entire village for he was the first Bartlett scout to do so in a Bartlett troop. A parade was held in John's honor prior to the ceremony. The parade began in Bartlett Park, stopped at the then park once located at Bartlett and Oak Avenues for the posting of the colors, then proceeded to the Bartlett Volunteer Fire Department's Fire Barn where the Court of Honor and reception was held. The invocation was given by Fr. Horne of St. Peter Damien Catholic Church, opening remarks by then Village President John Buelting, presentation of the Eagle award by Scoutmaster Charles Peterson, closing remarks by Scout Executive Kenneth Taylor and the closing prayer by Rev. Patterson of Immanuel United Church of Christ. Guests of honor included his proud parents John and Anna Hillard Sr., then Chief of Police Ed Heinberg, the Fire Chief Harvey Rosenwinkel, then Lion's Club President Robert Reif, former Bartlett Boy Scout leaders Harvey Brandt and Joseph Phelps and others. John, who began his scouting years in Cub Scouts, member of the Arrow of the Arrow and worked at Elgin's BSA Camp Big Timber, continued on his scouting career and by 1961 was an assistant scout master in Bartlett Troop 23, which at the time was Bartlett's only troop. |
