Schultz on Sunday July the ninth One thousand nine hundred and twenty two Elgin, Illinois At Home After August the first Bartlett, Illinois" On July 9, 1922, William "Bill" H. Schultz (1897-1993) and Ruby Lester (1901-1993) exchanged their wedding vows. Bill was born on a farm about a mile from Bartlett. In 1907, the Schultz family moved to the village where Bill attended Bartlett School. At age 17, he started working at his parent's hardware store, Schultz Hardware that began operations in 1910 and was once located in two locations on Bartlett Avenue. Bill attended Elgin Business School and later became a master plumber and electrician. Ruby Lester was born in Iowa. By 1910 she and her family were living in Belvidere, eventually moving to Elgin by 1920. According to a June 25, 1991, article in The Courier-News, "It was the day after Ruby Lester's 19th birthday and she knew Bill Schultz, 22, had a reputation for dating older women. So she stretched the truth a bit and told him she was 20." Bill responded it didn't matter because for him, "It was love at first sight." In 1924, the couple built their first home where they raise their three daughters Annette, Naomi and Nancy. Later they built a home on Eastern Avenue. The unexpecting passing of his father in 1936 saw Bill take over operations of Schultz Hardware for his mother, eventually buying it in 1950. Ruby helped also behind the counter. In 1964 the couple sold the business and building to Al and Betty Fraas and began enjoying retirement. They became charter members of the newly formed Golden Agers, where Bill served as its vice president! |
