"To Whom it may Concern" written by Louisa Shields, 1929 "It was the time the 3K's were on the rampage. I could hear them from my window, voices from the fields..." The Ku Klux Klan was active in this area at the time. They were targeting people of color and Catholics. As a response to this "rampage," Louisa Shields "took courage and asked the Catholic ladies whom I knew..." to begin the foundation of the formation of St. Peter Damian Church in Bartlett. The ladies established Our Beloved Lady of Victory Sodality in 1929. On June 14, 1942 the first mass was held in Bartlett. To date no evidence can be found of Ku Klux Klan activity in Bartlett proper during that time. The Shields family lived in Wayne Township, DuPage County. |
